Tan Cang International Container Terminal (TC-HICT) has just requested the Ministry of Transport (MoT) to allow it to officially receive container ships with a deadweight tonnage (DWT) of up to 145,000 DWT from January 1, 2024. In its latest letter to the MoT, TC-HICT said that it has developed a maritime safety plan for container ships with a DWT of 132,900 DWT to 145,000 DWT that have been approved by the Vietnam Maritime Administration (VMA). This plan was developed based on the MoT's approval to allow the port to test receiving container ships with a DWT of up to 145,000 DWT.

In the past year, Tan Cang International Container Terminal (TC-HICT) has safely received and released 9 container ships with a deadweight tonnage (DWT) of 132,900 DWT to 145,000 DWT.

From October 31, 2022 to October 31, 2023, Tan Cang International Container Terminal (TC-HICT) cooperated with relevant agencies to organize the safe reception and release of 9 container ships with a deadweight tonnage (DWT) of 132,900 DWT to 145,000 DWT.

In addition, the port received and released 152 container ships with a DWT of 100,000 DWT to 132,900 DWT entering and leaving the port for cargo handling (calculated for 2022 and the first 10 months of 2023).

"The reception of large-capacity ships in and out of TC-HICT port has contributed to bringing export and import goods from the northern region as well as the whole country directly to the European and American markets without having to transit through ports in the region such as Singapore, Hong Kong," said the port's leadership. TC-HICT. The port also cooperated with relevant agencies to seriously implement the maritime safety plan for ships with a DWT of 132,900 DWT to 145,000 DWT, achieving good results. The ships docked and departed safely, with no maritime safety incidents occurring.

It is worth noting that, in order to improve maritime safety, TC-HICT has completed the installation of a system for measuring the speed and angle of the ship's approach to the quay in July 2023, as required by the maritime safety plan for ships with a DWT of up to 145,000 DWT. At the same time, the port completed the dredging plan to achieve a water depth of -16.0m in front of the quay for both berths in August 2023.

TC-HICT has also signed a contract with CMB Marine Construction and Consulting JSC to develop a maritime safety plan for container ships with a DWT of up to 160,000 DWT, to be submitted to the Vietnam Maritime Administration for approval.

The port's leadership added that, from June 22-23, 2019, the port organized a simulation with a ship with a DWT of 160,000 DWT (equivalent to 14,000 Teus) with 22 scenarios for maneuvering the ship from buoy number 0 on the channel to TC-HICT port.

In addition, a number of additional scenarios were run according to the requirements of the pilot and port authority in complex hydrographic and weather conditions.

Based on this, TC-HICT has requested the Ministry of Transport and the Vietnam Maritime Administration to allow the port to officially receive ships with a DWT of up to 145,000 DWT for cargo handling from January 1, 2024.

Since its operation, the cargo throughput of TC-HICT port has been increasing continuously over the years. Specifically, from 418,544 Teus in 2019, the cargo throughput of the port in the first 10 months of 2023 has reached over 1 million Teus.

The port is receiving 16 service lines of shipping companies, including 5 domestic Asia services of CMA-CGM, Wanhai, OOCL, and SITC; 3 services to India and China of IAL, PIL, ONE, Wan Hai, and Cosco.

In particular, there are 8 direct services to the West Coast of the United States that have been operating at the port since April 2019 on ships with a DWT of 100,000D WT to 145,000 DWT of shipping companies such as Maersk, ONE, Hapag-Lloyd, Hyundai, Cosco, MSC, Yangming, CMA-CGM, and ZIM.
