STRENGTHENING CONNECTIVITY, ELEVATING THE MARITIME INDUSTRY IN THE ASEAN REGION

The 45th ASEAN Maritime Transport Working Group Meeting (MTWG 45) discussed a wide range of maritime issues of ASEAN member states.

 

From the Ministry of Transport, the 45th ASEAN Maritime Transport Working Group Meeting (MTWG 45) has just officially closed after three days of lively discussions on maritime issues.

Deeper cooperation in the maritime field Hoàng Hồng Giang, Deputy Director of the Vietnam Maritime Administration and Chairman of MTWG 45, said at the meeting, ASEAN countries adopted a number of joint cooperation documents that benefit the region, such as: Smart port guidelines, phase 5 VTS operator capacity development ideas, final draft of ASEAN container terminal performance guidelines... In the past term, Vietnam has established relationships with new partners such as the French Development Agency (AFD) with the ASEAN project on a sustainable strategy for ship waste management throughout 2023-2025; cooperation with IMO through a Memorandum of Understanding on future maritime cooperation...

With the role of MTWG Chairman in the 2022-2023 term, the leadership of the Vietnam Maritime Administration expressed the hope that the ASEAN maritime community and partners will cooperate more and more deeply in many fields of maritime, to contribute to the common development goal of the ASEAN community. At the same time, it is hoped that cooperation after the Kuala Lumpur KLTSP Strategic Transport Plan and the ASEAN Community 2025 will benefit all ASEAN countries. "This is essential in the context of the world is rapidly shifting to the application of modern technology, the use of new environmentally friendly energy in all aspects of the economy - society," Mr. Giang emphasized.

This was also the last conference that Vietnam organized as the rotating chairman of ASEAN.

 

Representatives from other countries highly appreciated Vietnam's role at the 45th ASEAN Maritime Transport Working Group Meeting (MTWG 45). In particular, the chairman of MTWG 45 effectively chaired and managed the meetings and discussions, and completed the entire agenda as scheduled.

Deputy Director of the Vietnam Maritime Administration Hoàng Hồng Giang expressed hope that ASEAN countries and partners will cooperate more deeply in the maritime field.

 

Many hot issues were on the agenda of the MTWG 45 conference.

The conference was attended by representatives from the International Maritime Organization (IMO); ASEAN member states; the ASEAN Secretariat; dialogue partners from the United States, Japan, South Korea, China, and other ASEAN partner organizations. Held from October 17-19, the conference focused on a number of important programs, including: The implementation of the Kuala Lumpur Transport Strategic Plan 2016-2025 Realizing the ASEAN single maritime market through the implementation of agreed strategies and measures.

Deploying the operation of the ASEAN RO-RO transport network Developing an efficient and integrated inland waterway transport (IWT) network Strengthening the positioning system and security measures in line with international customary standards In addition, experts from ASEAN countries also discussed issues such as: Building the necessary initiatives and policy recommendations to develop strategic maritime transport logistics between ASEAN and dialogue partners Strengthening regional cooperation in improving traffic safety Maritime transport initiatives to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic Sustainable development issues and the future of cooperation with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Dialogue with dialogue partners and ASEAN regional associations.

At the conference, ASEAN member states also updated their national development plans for improving the capacity of the ASEAN port network; realizing the operation of the RO-RO transport network in ASEAN.
