UPGRADE INFRASTRUCTURE, INCREASE INCENTIVES TO ATTRACT CONTAINER CARGO TO CHAN MAY PORT

Chan May Port (Thừa Thiên-Huế) is stepping up infrastructure investment, equipment, and phase 2 breakwater along with preferential policies to develop domestic and international container cargo sources.

Increased incentives, reduced cargo handling time Recently, the Haian Bell 243S container ship arrived at Chan May Port on November 5 to export and import 149 TUEs.

According to a representative of Chan May Port, with the current cargo handling capacity, each specialized crane at the port can handle 14-15 moves per hour.

Compared to the first container ships to enter Chan May Port, this number has increased by more than 40% (previously 10 moves per hour), improving the port's capacity to release ships and significantly shortening cargo handling time. The Haian Bell 243S alone reduced cargo handling time by nearly 5 hours.

Application of technology and specialized equipment contributes to increasing cargo handling capacity and reducing cargo handling time for container ships at Chan May Port.

It is worth noting that, under the preferential policies of Resolution 18 of the People's Council of Thua Thien-Hue Province, Haian ships and other shipping companies that make at least two trips per month to Chan May Port are also supported by the province with 210 million VND per trip. Businesses with goods exported or imported through Chan May Port are supported with 800,000 VND to 1.1 million VND per container (depending on the type of 20-foot or 40-foot container).

Mr. Le Chi Phai, Deputy General Director of Chan May Port Joint Stock Company, said that after more than 1 year of implementing container service (from October 2022), the port has increased investment in infrastructure, equipment, and applied policies to attract container cargo. Currently, the port regularly has reasonable solutions to receive ships, arrange operational plans, and organize cargo handling with high productivity and safety.

According to statistics, on average, Chan May Port welcomes 4-5 container ships per month, raising the total number of these ships through the port in the past 1 year to 65 trips, including 21 foreign ships, 44 domestic container ships. Cargo handling work is carried out smoothly and safely.

In addition, the source of container cargo imports and exports through Chan May Port is quite diverse, in addition to the popular local goods such as: beer, frit glaze, ceramic tiles, quartz, rice, rubber, cans, building materials, packaging (Thua Thien Hue) ....In addition, there are also some sources of goods from Quang Tri (rubber), Quang Binh (plywood), from Laos (rubber), Da Nang and Quang Nam (soft drinks, milk) ....

Connect and expand international container service, transit

According to the Reporter of Giao thông Newspaper, Chan May Port has two wharves with a total quay length of 771m, water depth in front of the wharf -12.5m, capable of receiving cargo ships with tonnage up to 70,000 DWT, tourist ships with the longest length and dimensions in the world and container ships with tonnage up to 35,000 DWT, 2,600 TEUs regularly in and out for loading and unloading.

In particular, with its location between the two largest cities in the central region (Hue - Da Nang), 40km from Phu Bai International Airport, 35km from Da Nang International Airport; the nearest and most convenient gateway to the East - West Economic Corridor with a distance of 200km, Chan May Port is an important link in the logistics service chain of Central Region and East - West Economic Corridor, playing an important role as a main gateway to the East Sea for the whole region.

Chan May Port is making efforts to invest in infrastructure to improve cargo handling capacity, expand domestic and international container services.

According to Mr. Huynh Van Toan, General Director of Chan May Port Joint Stock Company, Chan May Port is making efforts to invest in infrastructure to improve cargo handling capacity and expand domestic and international container services. The port has already completed the basic infrastructure system, such as a 2,500 square meter warehouse and container yard. The second phase of the breakwater is scheduled to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2024, increasing the total length of the breakwater to 750 meters and increasing cargo handling capacity.

In addition, Chan May Port is implementing the use of software to manage and exploit container cargo; regularly informing customers about the support policies of the province and the port; supporting customers 24/7 with port services; especially, prioritizing the arrangement of berths for container ships to dock immediately upon arrival at the port and moving towards prioritizing digital transformation, in order to provide partners and customers with quality, fast, convenient and simplest services when visiting Chan May Port.

At the Conference on connecting shipping companies and businesses with container cargo through Chan May Port on November 24, Chan May Port signed an agreement to implement the opening of a container shipping route through the port in early December 2023 with RCL (REGIONAL CONTAINER LINES from Thailand).

 

RCL currently owns and operates 49 container ships to 69 destinations, and has chosen Chan May Port to open a new shipping route. With this agreement, Chan May Port will provide maximum support to the shipping company, as well as free storage and a 20% discount on all container-related services.

Shipping companies that make at least two trips per month to Chan May Port are also supported by the local government with 210 million VND per trip.

According to Mr. Huynh Van Toan, the port is strengthening its connectivity and working with shipping companies and feeder companies to implement the transshipment of export and import goods on the (Haiphong ↔ Chan May (Hue) ↔ Ho Chi Minh City (Cat Lai, Cai Mep) route.

By 2024, Chan May Port Joint Stock Company will soon supplement the capacity to receive and exploit container ships for Pier 01, expand warehouses, and invest in additional specialized equipment to serve container handling; promote more shipping companies to open international container routes through Chan May Port.
